MELBOURNE - Victoria Mboko's impressive singles run at the Australian Open came to a halt in the fourth round on Sunday in Melbourne.
The Toronto teen, seeded 17th in the prestigious Grand Slam event, was bounced by Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus — the world's top-ranked female player — 6-1, 7-6 (1) in one hour 26 minutes inside Rod Laver Arena.
Sabalenka, who needed only 34 minutes to take the first set, finished with six aces, three double faults, 27 winners and 24 unforced errors.
Mboko, who found her game in the second set and forced her top-ranked opponent to dig deep in the second-set tiebreaker, finished with three aces, three double faults, 19 winners and 20 unforced errors.
Mboko made things interesting in the second set when she rallied from a 4-1 deficit to force the tiebreaker, but Sabalenka found an extra gear and finished the match.
Sabalenka will face the winner of a match between American Iva Jovic and Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, in the third round of women's doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa and her partner Luisa Stefani of Brazil beat Cristina Bucsa of Moldova and Nicole Melich-Martinez 6-4, 6-3 in one hour 25 minutes.
Dabrowski and her partner will face the winner of a match between the third-seeded Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Su-Wei Hsieh of Taiwan, and American Sofia Kenin and Laura Siegemund of German in the fourth round.
