It says autopsy reports do not suggest the existence of a new neurological condition and that many patients suffered from other illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Nearly 400 New Brunswick residents — mostly in the Acadian Peninsula and Moncton areas — have reported symptoms of what the province's Health Department has called a "neurological syndrome of unknown cause." 

First reported in 2021, symptoms include memory problems, balance issues, behavioural changes, muscle spasms and bursts of intense pain.

Studies in 2022 and 2025 — including in the journal JAMA Neurology — came to similar conclusions as Léger’s report and noted a majority of cases had been reported by a single neurologist.
