The weather agency says high winds and snow will set in around noon on Christmas Day, with up to 25 cm expected in eastern and western Newfoundland and up to 35 cm possible along the island's northeast coast.

That snow is expected to turn to rain in parts of eastern Newfoundland, particularly on the Avalon Peninsula.

Meanwhile, southeastern Labrador could see up to 50 cm of snow beginning Thursday evening and into Boxing Day.

Environment Canada says a second weather system could move into the area on Boxing Day, and officials are asking residents to check for updates.
