BRANDON - A teenager accused of attacking people with a sword at a high school in Brandon, Man., faces upgraded charges and may be sentenced as an adult.
The boy, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was arrested after a suspect entered Neelin High School in June, wearing a disguise and brandishing a sword.
Police later said a 16-year-old targeted people of colour and immigrants, and one victim suffered deep cuts on his hands, chest and thigh.
Officers attended quickly and Const. Moshe Linov and other responders were recognized for their efforts in July by the Manitoba government.
The accused was originally charged with offences including one count of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a weapon.
Manitoba's prosecution service says the assault with a weapon charges have been upgraded to attempted murder, and the Crown will seek to have an adult sentence imposed if there is a guilty finding.
"It is the Crown’s position that there is reasonable likelihood of conviction and that it is in the public interest to proceed on the charges of attempted murder with respect to all three victims," the government's central communications agency wrote in a statement Wednesday.
"The Crown has also given notice in court that it intends to seek an adult sentence in this matter, should the accused plead guilty or be convicted."
