CMUSAINT-EUSTACHE - Two people are dead after an apartment fire in Saint-Eustache, in the Laurentians, about 20 kilometres northwest of Montreal.
The victims were two adult brothers, whose identities have not yet been released.
The fire broke out in the six-unit building on Corbo Street late Saturday night. The 911 call was received at 11:11 p.m.
"We called in 30 firefighters, including four from neighbouring towns, to respond quickly," said Sébastien Laplante, director of the Saint-Eustache Fire Department, in an interview with The ºÃÉ«tv Press. "During the operation, we pulled two people out who were in cardiac arrest.Â
The two men were treated by paramedics and transported to the hospital. Â
Lapalnte said they received confirmation Sunday morning that both of the men had died.Â
He also confirmed that the fire started in one of the basement apartments, but the victims were found in a second-floor apartment.
The building was evacuated, and it was not yet certain when the occupants would be able to return to their homes. The extent of the damage has yet to be assessed.
“All the people in the apartments have been relocated by the Red Cross,†said Laplante, noting that some occupants were away visiting family.
There will be an investigation by the coroner and the Saint-Eustache Police Department to try to determine the circumstances that led to the fire.Â
