HAMILTON - Police in Hamilton say an innocent bystander is dead as they investigate what they're calling a tragic and brazen daytime shooting in the city's downtown core on Friday afternoon.

Police say 26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie, who immigrated to Canada from Ghana in 2024 and had been living in Hamilton, was declared dead at the scene.

They say a man was also shot and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect managed to escape, and officers say they're searching for a white male with a medium build and brown hair, who wore a black T-shirt, blue shorts, dark shoes and a dark medical-style mask.

Investigators believe the male victim may have been the intended target and there was no known connection between the shooter and Sarkodie.

The Emergency Response team are actively clearing Jackson Square as part of the investigation.

Police say road closures and traffic diversions are in place around King Street, James Street and MacNab Street.

Investigators are asking those who were in the area between 5 and 6 p.m. Friday and may have seen the incident to contact them.
