A police officer in Welland, Ont., was shot Friday in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect who hours later remained holed up in a building swarmed by police attempting to negotiate his surrender. 聽
The officer was treated in hospital and released with minor injuries, Niagara regional police said in an evening update on their website. She was hit in the chest while responding to reports of a shooting Friday morning, according to remarks from the Ontario premier and police.聽
Officers had also fired their guns during the "initial interaction," and the injured officer was sent to hospital as a precaution, police said.聽
"She's a wonderful person. She's going to survive," Premier Doug Ford said at an unrelated press conference on Friday.聽
Officers in tactical gear and an armoured vehicle surrounded a building near the intersection of Plymouth Road and Second Street in the city southwest of Niagara Falls. A male suspect was "contained within a building in the area," police said in a statement.聽
"Officers along with Emergency Task Unit members remain at the scene with negotiators working towards a peaceful surrender," they wrote.
Const. Richard Hingley, who spoke to media outlets at the scene, said police were called to the area to assist bylaw officers who were dealing with "a fencing issue around what appears to be an old church converted into a residence."
Hingley said that shortly after officers arrived, they were "met by gunfire from a male inside that building."聽
A shelter-in-place notice remained in effect for residents of the immediate area as of Friday evening, as police urged them to lock their doors and stay inside.
A lockdown at the nearby Welland Hospital was lifted at around 1:40 p.m. on Friday, police said, though access was still limited because of road closures. No one was able to leave or enter the hospital for several hours and all surgeries and outpatient appointments had been cancelled, the local health authority said.聽
Nearby schools were also locked down but police later said that staff had been evacuated from Plymouth Public School and St. Mary Catholic Elementary School.
Police have provided no further details about the suspect.
