TORONTO - Several parts of southern Ontario and Quebec saw their first snowfalls of the season after Environment Canada issued special weather statements for several areas across the province.Â
The federal weather agency issued special weather statements for snowfall from London, Ont., to Ottawa as a low pressure system moves through the province, prompting snowfall.Â
Toronto was expected to receive between five to 10 centimetres of snowfall as it continues into the evening, while Ottawa is expected to get 10 to 20 centimetres.Â
In downtown Montreal, which was expected to get nearly 10 centimetres of snow through Monday, Bianca Hernandez took in the sights of the wet snowfall while preparing for how her commute to work would change over the next few months.
"It's nice but I'm dreading the cold for the next few months," she said, adding she'll be bringing an extra pair of boots to her bank job and will likely have to wake up earlier in case any snow pileups make her walk longer.Â
"In the summer it was nice, but now it's going to be super cold and I'm not excited for that," she said.Â
Other parts of eastern Ontario, including Cornwall, Brockville and Kingston, are under freezing rain warnings, with an expected one to two millimetres of ice expected to accumulate. That rainfall is expected to begin late Sunday afternoon and last into the evening.Â
The weather agency says motorists should expect difficult driving conditions and adjust their travel plans accordingly and drivers should consider installing their winter tires.Â
In anticipation of the snowfall, the City of Toronto has opened a select number of new shelter spaces for people experiencing homelessness this weekend as temperatures in the city are expected to plunge to -5 C on Sunday.Â
