HCYA winter storm continues to blow across Saskatchewan and Manitoba today, forcing some school and road closures as Environment Canada warns of slippery conditions and little visibility in some areas.
The weather agency says the winter storm system is pushing through the southern parts of the two Prairie provinces, where blowing snow and gusty winds will begin to taper off later today.
Winter storm warnings have also been issued across north-central Ontario and into Quebec, with up to 30 centimetres of snow forecast.
Across the northern regions of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario, the national weather agency says Arctic-like temperatures are pushing the mercury lower to roughly -45 to -50 degrees Celsius, with the wind chill.
Environment Canada says southern portions of Manitoba will see up to 20 centimetres of snow and northerly wind gusts of up to 90 kilometres per hour.聽
The weather agency says travel in those areas will be "dangerous and likely impossible" due to near-zero visibility, and residents are advised to avoid travel and outdoor activities.聽
The province says several roads outside of Winnipeg remain closed due to the blizzard conditions.
Some school boards in the province, including the Lord Selkirk School Division and the Hanover School Division, have cancelled classes and buses. The University of Winnipeg has also closed due to the extreme weather conditions, postponing some exams scheduled for Thursday.聽
On Wednesday, the strong Alberta Clipper kept regional police very busy in Alberta, dealing with dozens of weather-related collisions due to the very icy conditions.
One major route in Alberta saw police respond to a widespread pile-up and delay involving 80 to 100 cars, closing the Queen Elizabeth II Highway between Calgary and Airdrie for hours.
