OTTAWA - U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs — and the spike in ºÃÉ«tv nationalism they inspired — have been named ºÃÉ«tvNews Story of the Year.
The tariffs story was selected in an annual survey of editors and news directors in media organizations from across Canada as the most important news story in Canada in 2025.
Trump's tariffs were up against several other stories, including the Lapu-Lapu attack, labour strikes, the Blue Jays World Series run, the B.C. ostrich cull, the HBC bankruptcy, Canada recognizing Palestinian statehood, the federal election and measles outbreaks.
Here is a tally of the votes:
Trump's tariffs: 61 votes
Blue Jays World Series run: 11 votes
Federal election 2025: 10 votes
HBC bankruptcy: four votes
Lapu-Lapu attack: three votes
Canada recognizes Palestinian statehood: two votes
Measles: two votes
Labour strikes: one vote
B.C. ostrich cull: one vote
