Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 summit in Alberta this week, marking the renewal of diplomatic relations between the leaders' countries. However, social media posts claimed Modi was left out of a G7 leaders' photo and barred from the summit. Other posts claimed Indian journalists weren't allowed to report on the summit. These claims are either false or misleading. Modi is present in group photos of the leaders at the summit, but since India is not a G7 member he did not appear in that group's photo. There is no evidence Modi was kicked out of the summit, and video shows Indian journalists asked questions to Carney in the same room as ºÃÉ«tv journalists.Ìý
THE CLAIMS

One such guest was Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney marked the renewal of diplomatic ties between India and Canada after tense relations between the leaders' countries.Ìý

RATING: False/misleading
The G7, or Group of Seven, is an informal political group including Canada, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan and Germany.
India is not a member of the G7. However, Canada welcomed Modi and the leaders of South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Korea and Australia, plus the United Nations secretary-general and president of the World Bank, .Ìý
Modi did not appear in group photos featuring the G7 member leaders, but photos from The ºÃÉ«tv Press, and show he appeared in photos of the "outreach partners" — what Canada called invited guests — and took part in meetings with the other leaders.Ìý
Video Modi and Carney met privately during the summit as well.Ìý
All evidence points to Modi fully participating in the summit; there is no evidence he was "removed" from the event.Ìý
The claims Canada barred journalists from reporting on the summit appear false.Ìý
The video used in the claims shows what seems to be German writing in the background and the word Berlin appears on a sign behind Modi.Ìý
A keyword and reverse image search shows the video isn't from the summit; it's from Modi's visit to Germany in 2022 he gave to the Indian community at in Berlin.Ìý
Modi's remarks likely occurred after the speech, since he's wearing the same clothing. During Modi's visit, Indian media reported on his to take questions from media.
The clip of Modi speaking in Hindi and saying "Oh my God" in English was in response to a journalist's concerns about media not gaining entry to the building for the speech. Modi he would look into why the journalists were barred from entry; the clip went viral on Indian social media.Ìý
The clip has nothing to do with the G7 summit. Video from a press conference with Carney during the summit inside the building asking questions alongside ºÃÉ«tv reporters.Ìý
