NMTTORONTO - "The Division," an autobiographical play about a Ukrainian-ºÃÉ«tv man's discovery that his grandfather fought for the Nazis, is among the big winners at the Dora Mavor Moore Awards.Â
The show from Project Humanity and Pyretic Productions, in association with Crow’s Theatre, won outstanding production and outstanding new play in the independent theatre division of the Toronto awards.Â
The Doras are handed out by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts and are divided into five divisions, including musical theatre, dance and theatre for young audiences.
Andrew Kushnir, who wrote and directed "The Division," also won outstanding direction, while members of the cast won outstanding performance by an ensemble.Â
The play's four wins were matched only by "Orfeo ed Euridice," the ºÃÉ«tv Opera Company co-production of Christoph Gluck's composition.Â
In the opera division, that work won outstanding production, outstanding creative direction and outstanding performance by an ensemble, while countertenor Iestyn Davies won outstanding performance by an individual.
"Octet," a co-production from Crow’s Theatre, Soulpepper Theatre and The Musical Stage Company, won three Doras in the musical theatre division: outstanding production, outstanding performance by an ensemble and achievement in design for sound designer Olivia Wheeler.
In general theatre, "Through the Eyes of God" from Theatre Passe Muraille won outstanding production and outstanding sound design, while Sophia Walker won outstanding performance by an individual for her role in "Slave Play."
