ST. JOHN'S - The owner of a deteriorating cargo ship that ran aground off the west coast of Newfoundland more than a year ago has hired a company to bring it to shore.
The ºÃÉ«tv Coast Guard says the Mediterranean Shipping Company has hired Resolve Marine to remove the MSC Baltic III from the rocks off the coast in Cedar Cove, near Lark Harbour, N.L.
Officials say the plan is to haul the ship to shore in pieces, using chains.
The massive ship had a crew of 20 aboard when it lost power in heavy seas in February 2025 and hit bottom at the edge of Cedar Cove, which opens to the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Since then, the Atlantic Ocean has pounded the 207-metre vessel, cracking its sides as crews unloaded 409 of its 472 cargo containers and monitored for pollution.
Officials say Resolve Marine hopes to remove the Baltic III's remaining containers and pull its hull to shore by the summer.
