President Donald Trump signed a bill Wednesday to compel the Justice Department to make public its case files on the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, a potentially far-reaching development in a yearslong push by survivors of Epstein’s abuse for a public reckoning.
The president’s signing sets a 30-day countdown for the Justice Department to produce what’s commonly known as the Epstein files. Those include everything the Justice Department has collected over multiple federal investigations into Epstein, as well as his longtime confidante and girlfriend, , who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for luring teenage girls for the disgraced financier. Those records total around 100,000 pages, according to .
It will also compel the Justice Department to produce all its internal communications on Epstein and his associates and his 2019 death in a Manhattan jail cell as he awaited charges for sexually abusing and trafficking dozens of teenage girls.
The legislation, however, exempts some parts of the case files. The bill’s authors made sure to include that the Justice Department could withhold personally identifiable information of victims, child sexual abuse materials and information deemed by the administration to be classified for national defense or foreign policy.

Trump administration makes major changes to a report it commissioned on FEMA reforms, AP sources say
A draft of a much-anticipated report on reforms to the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been whittled down in size, with recommendations compiled by a council appointed by the president slashed and amended by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s office, according to three people familiar with the developments.
The three people, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss the issue with the media, said the report shrunk from over 160 pages to roughly 20. They said it left council members and other emergency management leaders concerned that some of the recommendations about the country’s disaster preparedness won’t make it into the final copy, which is expected around Dec. 12.
The draft report’s downsizing reflects the Trump administration’s push to disengage the federal government from disaster management and the agency overseeing it, FEMA, pushing more responsibility on states, tribes and territories.

Trump signs bill to release Jeffrey Epstein case files
Trump signed legislation Wednesday that compels his administration to release files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, bowing to political pressure from his own party after initially resisting those efforts.
Trump could have chosen to release many of the files on his own months ago.
“Democrats have used the ‘Epstein’ issue, which affects them far more than the Republican Party, in order to try and distract from our AMAZING Victories,” Trump said in a social media post as he announced he had signed the bill.
Now, the bill requires the Justice Department to release all files and communications related to Epstein, as well as any information about the investigation into his death in a federal prison in 2019, within 30 days. It allows for redactions about Epstein’s victims for ongoing federal investigations, but DOJ cannot withhold information due to “embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.”
Larry Summers takes leave from teaching at Harvard after release of Epstein emails
The former U.S. treasurer abruptly went on leave Wednesday from teaching at Harvard University, where he once served as president, over showing he maintained a friendly relationship with , Summers’ spokesperson said.
Summers had been retreating from his public commitments amid the fallout of the emails revelation, but he had maintained that he would continue teaching economics classes at Harvard.
Harvard had just reopened an investigation into connections between Summers and Epstein
The school did not mention Summers by name, but the decision to restart the probe follows the showing that he was friendly with long after the financier pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from an underage girl in 2008.
Florida representative indicted on charges of stealing millions in disaster funds
U.S. Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick of Florida has been indicted on charges accusing her of stealing $5 million in federal disaster funds and using some of the money to aid her 2021 campaign, the Justice Department said Wednesday.
The Democrat is accused of stealing Federal Emergency Management Agency overpayments that her family health care company had received through a federally funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract, federal prosecutors said. A portion of the money was then funneled to support her campaign through candidate contributions, prosecutors allege.
“Using disaster relief funds for self-enrichment is a particularly selfish, cynical crime,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “No one is above the law, least of all powerful people who rob taxpayers for personal gain.”
A phone message left at Cherfilus-McCormick’s Washington office was not immediately returned.

Top Army officials are in Ukraine to help with peace talks
Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is accompanied by Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, the service’s most senior officer; Gen. Chris Donahue, U.S. Army Europe and Africa commanding general; and Sgt. Maj. Michael Weimer, the Army’s top enlisted official, an Army official confirmed Wednesday.
A U.S. official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive plans, said Driscoll had been planning a trip to Ukraine for some time to discuss the country’s drone warfare innovations and tactics but that last week President Trump decided to identify him as a kind of “special representative” to kickstart peace negotiations and execute a fact-finding mission.
The U.S. official confirmed that Driscoll is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this week as well as top Ukrainian government, military and defense industry officials.
The White House didn’t respond to a request for comment. The Wall Street Journal first reported the visit.

Appeals court halts order restricting immigration agents’ use of force in Chicago
A federal appeals court has an order that restricts the use of force by federal immigration agents in the Chicago area, calling it “overbroad.”
But the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals also cautioned against “overreading” its stay issued Wednesday and said a quick appeal process could lead to a “more tailored and appropriate” order.
Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis in response to a lawsuit filed by news outlets and protesters. They allege federal agents used excessive force during the immigration crackdown that led to thousands of arrests across the nation’s third-largest city and its many suburbs.
Among other things, Ellis’ order restricted agents from using physical force and chemical agents like tear gas and pepper balls, unless necessary or to prevent “an immediate threat.”
Judge to proceed with contempt probe after US flew migrants to El Salvador prison in March
A federal judge Wednesday asked attorneys to identify witnesses and offer plans for how to conduct a contempt probe of the Trump administration for failing to turn around planes carrying Venezuelan migrants to El Salvador in March.
U.S. District Judge James Boasberg in Washington said a ruling Friday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit gave him the authority to proceed with the inquiry, which will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to refer the matter for prosecution.
On March 15, Boasberg ordered the aircraft carrying accused gang members to return to the U.S., but they landed instead in El Salvador, where the migrants were held at a notorious prison.

New Orleans mayor-elect expresses concern over planned immigration crackdown
New Orleans Mayor-elect Helena Moreno told the AP she is “very concerned” that federal agents set to descend on the city for a two-month operation will not respect people’s rights.
“I’m very concerned about due process being violated, I’m very concerned about racial profiling,” Moreno said.
Moreno, a Mexican-American immigrant, said there is “a lot of fear” in her city.
Moreno said her team is working to provide information and resources to people who could be targeted and plans a “call to action” for local immigration lawyers to ensure rights are protected.

The first and second ladies toured two kindergarten classes and a first grade class at DeLalio Elementary School, which is part of the Camp Lejeune community.

Missouri seeks to seize Chinese assets over COVID court ruling
Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway says she as asked the U.S. State Department to serve asset seizure notices on China to try to collect a nearly $25 billion court judgement related to COVID-19 pandemic.
Hanaway wants to seize properties owned in the U.S. by the Chinese government or by companies partly owned by the Chinese government as a means of fulfilling a court award. Earlier this year, a federal judge sided with Missouri’s claim that China hoarded personal protective equipment during the pandemic, thus harming the state and its residents.
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said it does not recognize the U.S. judicial ruling.
Hanaway acknowledged Wednesday that collecting from China will be difficult but said she is prepared for a long court battle.
Trump says crown prince has urged him to take action to help end Sudan’s civil war
Trump in his remarks at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum said Prince Mohammed told him that bringing an endgame to the war “would be the greatest thing you can do, that would be greater than what you’ve already done.”

About 300 ɫtv Guard members from Indiana will be deployed to Washington D.C. starting in December for a period of no longer than four months.
According to a news release from the Indiana ɫtv Guard, the request came from the D.C. ɫtv Guard to “increase safety in the nation’s capital.
“The news release said the Indiana members will be relieving troops from other states who were mobilized in August.“Hoosiers are proud of our Guardsmen, who are well-trained and fully prepared for this mission,” Indiana Gov. West Virginia Guard stay in Washington extended
Some West Virginia ɫtv Guard members are extending their stay in the nation’s capital through the end of the year to support President Donald Trump’s crime-fighting efforts.
Gov. Patrick Morrisey said about 160 Guard members volunteered to remain in Washington, D.C. Those who chose not to continue the mission returned to West Virginia on Monday. More than 300 Guard members had been sent to Washington in August.
The governor said he would re-evaluate extending the mission every quarter through the end of June.

WHO reduces its workforce as the US and others cut funding
The World Health Organization has reduced its workforce by roughly one-fourth compared to staff levels at the end of last year as the United States and other top backers have cut funding.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the Trump administration’s decision to pull the U.S. out of WHO along with funding cuts from other top donors has left the U.N. health agency with a gap of about $500 million for its 2026-27 budget.

In an unusual move, Republicans and Democrats in the Senate agreed Tuesday evening to pass the bill as soon as it was sent over from the House, which had passed it 427-1 earlier in the day.
The Senate received the bill Wednesday morning and it was immediately passed without any floor action.
The quick Senate action came after months of opposition from Trump and Republican leadership. But they relented as it became clear it would pass with many Republican votes.
Trump has now said he will sign the bill.

The government lawyer knew what was coming as she stood inside a courtroom and texted an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent waiting in a corridor a few feet away.
“I can’t do this,” the lawyer said in a text message. “This is a new emotional load.”
“I understand,” the agent responded. “Hopefully we meet again in a better situation.”
Nearby, a Cuban man who’d lived in the U.S. for years stepped into the courtroom where the government lawyer was waiting for what the man thought was a routine hearing. The man was doing what the law required, and brought along his wife, a legal resident, and their 7-month-old infant.
Then the lawyer moved to have the man’s asylum claim dismissed and a judge agreed, making the man eligible for “expedited removal.” As he left the courtroom, the man was swarmed by plainclothes immigration agents who’d been surveilling him. A struggle ensued and the wife’s shouts could be heard from the hallway as the lawyer moved on to the next case.
The agent replied minutes later: “Got him.”
Over several months, reporters for The Associated Press observed immigration court proceedings in 21 cities. Hearings repeatedly ended with cases dismissed by the government, allowing plainclothes federal agents to carry out arrests in courthouse hallways in close coordination with attorneys from the Department of Homeland Security.
