MADRID (AP) — Spain’s acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Wednesday defended his controversial amnesty deal for Catalonia’s separatists in parliament a day before the Socialist leader seeks the endorsement of the chamber to form a new government.

Protests backed by right-wing political parties against the proposed amnesty turned violent again come nightfall when riot police used batons and shields to beat back crowds gathered outside the Socialist party headquarters in Madrid.
