WINNIPEG - Jesper Wallstedt was not only unbeatable on Sunday afternoon, the Minnesota Wild goaltender has yet to be beaten this season.
Wallstedt stopped 32 shots to record his third shutout and sixth victory in his eight starts (6-0-2) this year as the Wild blanked the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 before 14,368 witnesses at Canada Life Centre.
鈥淗e鈥檚 playing like a 鈥榃all鈥 right now,鈥 said Brock Faber, whose short-handed goal gave Minnesota a 2-0 lead late in the second period. 鈥淚t鈥檚 fun to watch and it gives us all confidence.
鈥淵ou can tell that he鈥檚 just gaining confidence as every day goes by. It鈥檚 so great to see. It took time for him to get here. He worked and battled, and went through adversity and ups and downs, and to see him playing the way he can play, it鈥檚 incredible. We just need to keep it rolling for him and Gus (Filip Gustavsson).鈥
Faber added that Wallstedt held the fort when the Jets barnstormed Minnesota out of the starting gate.
鈥淚 thought maybe we didn鈥檛 get off to the start that we wanted,鈥 Wallstedt said. 鈥淚 felt we were, at the moment, defending really well, even though we got stuck in our own zone for a couple minutes and they get some pressure. We were still calm and collected and stuck to our gameplan and, after a while, we started to step up and play our game again.鈥
Wallstedt credited his teammates for his success.
鈥淓veryone had a lot of blocked shots,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e sacrificing themselves too, getting in front of the puck, so obviously, when they maybe make a mistake or a puck bounces, I鈥檓 there to bail them out. We鈥檙e a team, we work together, and I felt like we are having a really good connection right now.
鈥淭he way our team has sacrificed themselves, I feel like we鈥檙e one of the teams that blocks the most shots. We try to get in front of every puck. They take away sticks and everything. And boxing out, so I can focus on my job. I feel like pucks have been getting stuck in me and hopefully, I show some calmness back there, that I can show that they can trust me.鈥
The Wild (12-7-4) have not lost in their last eight outings and have not allowed a goal in their last two games.
鈥淲e've gotten excellent goaltending,鈥 said Wild coach John Hynes. 鈥淚 think both those guys have deserved the shoutouts, but I think, from a defensive standpoint, we're committed in that area. So, I think being strong defensively, combined with excellent goaltending, is a good recipe for that.鈥
Kirill Kaprizov, who extended his point streak to five games, and Danila Yurov also scored for Minnesota.
Winnipeg dropped to 12-9-0 after going 1-2 on its homestand and is trending the wrong way as it embarks on a five-game road trip.
鈥淲e still have a long way to go,鈥 said defenceman Dylan DeMelo. 鈥淚t鈥檚 more of the process, and I think that鈥檚 our concern as a team. I don鈥檛 think we are playing the way we want to play. Result? Take that out of the equation.聽
"We aren鈥檛 even close to where we need to be to be a successful team when it really matters down the road. We鈥檝e shown it in flashes, but it hasn鈥檛 been consistent. We need to find that consistency, but we are only a quarter of the way into the season here."
The Jets lost defenceman Neal Pionk to a lower-body injury midway through the first period.
鈥淲e鈥檝e been hammered (by injuries) and we got hammered again tonight,鈥 said Jets coach Scott Arniel. 鈥淐onsistency, whether that鈥檚 period to period or game to game, has been something that I鈥檇 say in this first 21 (games) has been lacking.鈥
The loss spoiled Mark Scheifele鈥檚 900th NHL game, the most in franchise history.
