TORONTO - Back with the Toronto Blue Jays for a second stint, infielder Charles McAdoo is just trying to make the most of his major league experience.
On Saturday afternoon, McAdoo took advantage of the opportunity by driving in a pair of runs, including a go-ahead double in the bottom of the seventh inning, to help the Blue Jays defeat the New York Yankees 4-1.
So what has changed from his first go-around with the club when he made his MLB debut in late May?
鈥淚 feel like all the nerves and excitement just condense into more focus,鈥 McAdoo said.
The first baseman broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning when he hit a double deep into centre-field, allowing Ernie Clement to score the winning run from first base. He followed that up with a bases-loaded single in the eighth inning to drive in another run and gave the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.
Nathan Lukes had a fielder鈥檚 choice RBI to give the Jays a 4-1 lead, to cap the two-run inning.
The win helped the Blue Jays (61-64) in their late charge for a wild-card spot berth will aim for a series sweep of the Yankees (68-55) on Sunday.
鈥淚t's going to be a grind. A lot of games left and we've got to keep bringing this same kind of feel, the same kind of intensity every single day,鈥 Blue Jays manager John Schneider said of the playoff hunt. "But it definitely feels different than it has for a lot of the year and it feels pretty damn good.鈥
The Blue Jays won their sixth consecutive series as a result of picking up the first two games of a three-game set with New York.
Ricky Tiedemann made his MLB debut for the Blue Jays on Saturday. Once considered the club鈥檚 top pitching prospect, a series of injuries including Tommy John surgery derailed the left-hander鈥檚 development.
Tiedemann allowed two hits and one earned run, while striking out two batters in 1 2/3 innings. The 6-foot-4 pitcher was selected in the third round of the 2021 MLB draft.
鈥淗e didn't seem overwhelmed,鈥 Schneider said of Tiedemann. 鈥淚 thought he handled the whole thing really well and kind of did exactly what we had hoped for today in terms of getting the amount of outs and throwing the amount of pitches that we wanted him to do.鈥
