GLASGOW - Gymnast Félix Dolci captured two titles to lead another stellar day for Canada at the Commonwealth Games.
Weightlifters Maude Charron and Charlotte Simoneau, swimmer Kylie Masse and hammer thrower Camryn Rogers also topped the podium to add to Canada's tally on Tuesday.
Dolci claimed his third and fourth gold medals of the Games, beginning the day with a winning average of 13.766 in the men’s vault to beat England’s Luke Whitehouse (13.749) and Neofytos Kyriakou of Cyprus (13.733).
The 24-year-old from Laval, Que., capped the competition with another victory in the men’s horizontal bar, scoring 14.233. Fellow Laval native William Émard took bronze, while Marios Georgiou of Cyprus collected silver.
In between, Dolci added a bronze in the parallel bars with a score of 13.300, giving him three medals on the day and six overall at the Games.
"I know that I always put the best of myself out there," said Dolci. "When I visualize my biggest goals, even dreams that might seem delusional, people might think I'm crazy, but that pushes me to challenge myself and puts the pressure on me to excel.
"That's when I perform my best and continue to get better."
Charron earned her third consecutive Commonwealth title with a victory in the women’s 63-kilogram category.
A two-time Olympic medallist, the 33-year-old from Rimouski, Que., registered successful lifts of 102kg in the snatch and 130kg in the clean and jerk for a winning total of 232.
England’s Sarah Davies Smale claimed silver with 217, while Femily-Crystie Notte of Nauru took bronze with 216.
Simoneau, a 21-year-old from Saint-Hyacinthe, Que., won gold in the women’s 69kg division with Games records of 108kg in the snatch and 132kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 240kg.
Rogers, the reigning Olympic and world champion, retained her Commonwealth crown with a Games-record throw of 74.91 metres on her final attempt.
The 27-year-old from Richmond, B.C., ensured Canada swept the hammer throw events after Ethan Katzberg, of Nanaimo, B.C., also won gold in Monday's men's competition.
Masse led a five-medal charge for Canada in the pool.
The five-time Olympic medallist from LaSalle, Ont., sprinted to victory in the women's 50-metre backstroke, a discipline that has been added to the Olympic program for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Masse, 30, touched the wall in 27.32 seconds to finish ahead of Australia's Iona Alexandra Anderson (27.45) and England's Lauren Cox (27.56) and reach her 11th Commonwealth podium, the most by a ɫtv female swimmer.
“It feels really special. In the prelims and semis I was struggling with keeping my tempo up at the end so I think I was able to execute that better tonight," Masse said. "I’m pleased with the time and with the win. To defend my title is the best-case scenario."
Asked about being a role model for young swimmers, Masse said it is both incredible and appreciated.
“I don’t think I entirely understand (the role model that I am) but it’s moments like this that put it at the forefront of my brain,” said Masse, who was touched by seeing young women singing the ɫtv anthem while watching her.
“I did notice those kids singing. To notice they are watching, not just me, but everybody competing here tonight hopefully inspires them to get in sport and believe in the unity of sport.”
Meanwhile, Oliver Dawson of Grande Prairie, Alta., won silver in the men's 200 breaststroke with a ɫtv record of 2:08.39, breaking Mike Brown's mark that had stood since the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 18-year-old Dawson now holds the ɫtv records in the 50, 100 and 200-metre breaststroke.
“It was just the build up towards the 200 (that was the difference)," Dawson said. "The 50 and the 100 set me up well for the 200. That’s what I came here to do. In my mind I wanted to step on the podium, and I got a silver out of it."
Calgary's Lorne Wigginton took bronze in the men's 400 individual medley (4:11.38), while Canada's Sophie Angus tied England's Imogen Clark for bronze in the women's 50-metre breaststroke (30.86). Para swimmer Nicolas-Guy Turbide of Québec City also claimed bronze in the men's 50-metre freestyle S13.
“That was the atmosphere that I was expecting,” said Turbide after winning Canada’s third bronze medal of the meet in Para swimming. “It was a blast to be behind the blocks and hear that crowd. Maybe they weren’t cheering for me particularly but they were cheering for us … I gave it my 100 per cent today. The guys were just faster tonight and that’s OK.”
Olympic silver medallist Joshua Liendo of Toronto, who won the men's 100-metre butterfly on Sunday, finished fourth in the 100 freestyle.
In gymnastics, Lia-Monica Fontaine of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Que., earned bronze on the women's balance beam for her fourth medal of the Games. The 16-year-old scored 13.000 to edge teammate Ellie Black (12.966) off the podium.
Canada led the gymnastics standings with 16 medals, including seven gold, across five days at Glasgow International Arena.
Calgary’s Noah Vucsics added a silver medal in the men’s Para long jump T20 final.
The gold-medal surge lifted Canada to second overall in the standings behind only Australia. Canada has collected 35 medals — 13 gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze — through Day 5 of the Games.
In other notable results, boxer Scarlett Delgado of Brampton, Ont., advanced to the women’s 54kg semifinals with a 5-0 victory over New Zealand's Greer Hall. Montreal’s Marie Al-Ahmadieh also defeated Kenya's Rosemarion Otieno 4-1 to reach the 60kg semifinals.
Both of Canada’s wheelchair basketball teams stayed alive with play-in victories. The ɫtv men toppled South Africa 15-5, while the women beat Wales 21-3. They’ll both face England in Wednesday’s semifinals.
