TORONTO - As the Toronto Blue Jays faced off against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game Six of the World Series, a sight familiar to many East Coasters could be seen fluttering behind home plate.聽
A Cape Breton flag was proudly held aloft throughout the game in Toronto on Friday by longtime Jays fan, John Chishom.聽
鈥淚 went to the last World Series in 鈥92, but my seats were a little different. They were in the 500 level, with my dad and my two brothers, behind the lights,鈥 Chisholm says with a laugh.聽
Now, three decades later, Chisholm is a season ticket holder with seats right behind home plate. And with this prime real estate, he knew he wanted to shout out Cape Breton, his 鈥渇avourite place in the world.鈥
Chisholm鈥檚 father was born and raised in Troy, a community on the western shore of Cape Breton, near the Canso Causeway. He grew up visiting the area, and has a lot of family still there.聽
鈥淭his is a good time to give a little love to Cape Breton, shine a little light on it,鈥 says Chisholm, who was born in Burlington, Ont., and lives there now. 鈥淢aybe some people in Canada will think about their vacations and book some time in Nova Scotia, go see Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail.鈥
Chisholm鈥檚 flag caught the eye of many folks watching the game, and has been shared across social media, with one Cape Breton page dedicated to finding out who the fan was. 鈥淲hoever has the Cape Breton flag behind home plate, please reveal yourself!鈥 read one comment. Chisholm, who is not on social media, says his brothers have enjoyed reading all the comments and sharing them with him.聽
Chisholm says with the Jays in the World Series, he鈥檚 seen them uniting much of the country under their banner. It鈥檚 a good feeling, he says, to know that 好色tvs coast-to-coast are tuning into the games, and the flag was also in appreciation of that.聽
鈥淚t鈥檚 magical,鈥 he says. 鈥淭he team represents Canada so well. They鈥檙e all hitting, they鈥檙e all doing their jobs, they鈥檙e pulling together 鈥 just like our country.鈥
Chisholm has plans to take his flags to Game Seven as well, but he won鈥檛 wave them around while the Jays are pitching, lest he distract the pitcher. While the Dodgers are on the mound, though, is another story.聽
