TEXADA ISLAND, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA - British Columbia's Conservation Officer Service says a grizzly bear has been found dead on Texada Island after Mounties told them someone reported shooting and wounding the animal.
The bear has been the focus of much public attention after it began stalking people, harassing livestock and damaging property on the island and in communities on the nearby Sunshine Coast.聽
The service says in a statement on social media that the RCMP told them the bear was reported shot and wounded on Monday, and it can confirm the tagged grizzly is the same animal spotted on Texada Island in recent weeks.聽
It says a necropsy will be performed on the animal.聽
In June, the service said that the bear was not a candidate for relocation after being moved twice from Sunshine Coast communities in the past several months.聽
The service says it had received complaints about the bear over several months, including that it stalked a couple on a Powell River trail who only escaped by getting into the water while it paced back and forth on the shore, then tore up one of their jackets before leaving.聽
