OTTAWA - Ottawa police say they have arrested a 19-year-old man after a school crossing guard was fatally struck by a vehicle that fled the scene on Monday.Â
Police say Peter Clark was struck while on duty near an elementary school on Cedarview Road at Kennevale Drive in the city's Barrhaven neighbourhood.
They allege the driver fled the scene and say Clark was taken to a hospital before he died from his injuries.
Police say a 19-year-old was arrested Tuesday in connection with the case, but did not release any other information, including any charges he may face.Â
Investigators had been looking for a dark-coloured Ford F-150 believed to be involved in the hit-and-run.
Police say their investigation continues as the community mourns Clark's death.Â
"Crossing guards play a vital role in protecting children and families, standing in all conditions to ensure students can travel to and from school safely," police said in a statement.
"Mr. Clark’s commitment to that responsibility reflects a service to the community that deserves our utmost respect and gratitude. This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts are with the school community and all those affected."
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe called the crossing guard's death "absolutely heartbreaking."
"It’s completely unacceptable that this should happen to someone who was trying to keep children safe," the mayor wrote in a social media post.Â
"What a terrible loss for our community."
