KANANASKIS - The G7 summit continued today without U.S. President Donald Trump, who left the talks ahead of schedule on Monday.
Prime Minister Mark Carney set aside today 鈥 the second and final day of the summit 鈥 to focus on foreign policy. The prime minister also sat down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

8:06 p.m.
Prime Minister Mark Carney says the objective of the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta, this week was to begin to build what he calls a "new era of co-operation" that looks for long-term economic and security resilience, rather than short-term efficiency.
In his closing press conference after the meetings he also insisted repeatedly there was no problem generating a joint G7 statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine even though there was not one.
Carney included mention of the war in Ukraine in his "chair's summary", which he issued in the absence of the typical overall summary agreed to by all leaders.
He says that summary was agreed upon by everyone including U.S. President Donald Trump.

Canada and India agreed to designate new high commissioners and restore regular diplomatic services to citizens in both countries following a meeting between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Alberta.
Canada expelled six Indian diplomats and consular officials last October, following news that law enforcement had linked agents of the Indian government to a targeted campaign against 好色tv citizens.聽
India expelled the acting 好色tv high commissioner in New Delhi and five other 好色tv diplomats last fall in response, and the posts have remained vacant since then.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi says on social media that he had an "excellent" meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.聽
He says he complimented him and the 好色tv government for successfully hosting the G7 summit.聽
Modi says India and Canada are connected by a "strong belief in democracy, freedom and rule of law."
He says he and Carney look forward to working closely to add "momentum to the India-Canada friendship" and that areas like trade, energy, space, clean energy, critical minerals and fertilizers "offer immense potential."

The Prime Minister's Office says Mark Carney and Brazilian President Luiz In谩cio Lula da Silva spoke about opportunities to deepen trade, commerce and investment.聽
They also talked about priorities like fortifying critical mineral supply chains and fighting wildfires.
The PMO says Carney emphasized the "immense potential" for increased co-operation and underscored the countries' shared values, like protecting the environment.

Oxfam, an organization aiming to end poverty and inequality focusing on women's rights, says it's "deeply concerned" by the outcomes of the G7 summit in Kananaskis.
It says the summit fell short of "delivering the leadership the world needs," arguing that leaders missed the chance to exert "any meaningful pressure toward peace in the Middle East."
It says the call for de-escalation between Israel and Iran was "corrupted" by geopolitical partiality and bias.聽

Carney says it was "a great honour" to host Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 as the two leaders sat down for a bilateral chat.
Carney says it's a testament to the importance of India, Modi's leadership and the importance of the issues that the countries look to tackle together.
Those issues include the future of AI and the fight against transnational repression and terrorism.
Speaking through a translator, Modi says he thinks India-Canada relations are extremely important, noting both countries stand for democratic values.

The South Korean president spoke in Korean about this being a 鈥渟pecial visit鈥 and noted the 鈥渓ongstanding partnership鈥 dating back to Canada鈥檚 contribution in the Korean War and his country鈥檚 economic development. He said there is a way to 鈥減ay back鈥 this help with trusted partners like Canada.

The leaders of the G7 nations release a series of joint statements on issues ranging from transnational repression and migrant smuggling to AI and quantum computing. The leaders did not sign a joint communiqu茅 or issue a statement about Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
A wider group of signatories, which includes Australia, India and South Korea, are committing to working together to invest in responsible critical minerals projects. Australia, India, Mexico, South Korea and South Africa also signed on to a wildfire charter that calls for co-operation to prevent, fight and recover from devastating fires.

Laing says business ties across G7 countries show that "durable relationships that are mutually beneficial are possible and desirable."

The summit is running 1.5 hours behind schedule, summit officials say, as leaders scramble to make various bilateral meetings, particularly those with visiting non-G7 leaders.
Prime Minister Mark Carney鈥檚 schedule is also jumbled and his meetings are not occurring in the order set out in his itinerary.
The summit site is seeing a late flurry of activity common at large summits, with flustered staffers speed-walking while muttering into earpieces.
While the group photo Carney was set to hold with all the visiting leaders has been pushed back by an hour, his handshake receptions for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other guests went off smoothly.

Military helicopters can be heard coming and going at the summit site as guest leaders from non-G7 countries and international agencies including the United Nations arrive.
The guest list for non-G7 leaders includes the leaders of Australia, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and South Africa.

Prime Minister Mark Carney met this morning with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders shook hands and made brief remarks to reporters before their closed-door discussion.
Carney says he condemns "in the strongest terms" the latest Russian attacks on Ukraine and says Canada is providing $4.3 billion in new support for Ukraine's defence.
That sum includes $2 billion for weapons like drones, ammunition and armoured vehicles 鈥 which Canada will count toward its NATO defence spending target 鈥 as well a $2.3 billion loan to help Ukraine rebuild its infrastructure.
Canada also announced a new sanctions package targeting Russia's shadow fleet and energy revenues.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte is "one of the most experienced leaders in the world" as the two men prepared to hold a private discussion on the sidelines of the G7 summit this morning.
Carney says the world is "very fortunate" that Rutte took on the leadership of NATO at such a crucial time.
Rutte says he is pleased with Canada's decision to increase its defence spending to meet NATO's two per cent target this year.

Canada and Italy release a joint statement. The leaders committed to deepening commercial ties and diversifying trade between Canada and Italy. They also encouraged co-operation in areas like nuclear energy, AI and quantum.聽
The leaders signalled the importance of closer collaboration to address security challenges. The statement said they also recognized opportunities for "increased engagement and expanded commercial ties in the defence sector."
