Heavy snow hammered much of southern Ontario and parts of Quebec on Thursday, shuttering schools and causing commuter chaos throughout the day. 

Environment Canada said some parts of Ontario, including the Greater Toronto Area, could see up to 40 centimetres of snow by Thursday evening, even as snowfall warnings for Toronto, Hamilton and Kitchener were lifted by the late afternoon.
