Doctors are reporting a surge in respiratory syncytial virus among young children, a common illness that typically emerges a little bit later in the fall and winter season.

Only a small proportion of cases are severe enough to require hospitalization 鈥 most kids can be treated and recover at home 鈥 but RSV is pretty much ubiquitous among babies and young toddlers, says Dr. Jesse Papenburg, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the Montreal Children's Hospital.
