OTTAWA - Statistics Canada says the country's population is expected to reach 63 million by the year 2073. Here's a list of figures predicted by the national agency.
— The population of those over 85 could triple in the next five decades.
— The percentage of children between ages 0 and 14 in the overall population continues to decline, falling from 34 per cent in 1962 to 15.4 per cent last year and it will keep falling.
— Growth in the proportion of those over 65 will be less pronounced after 2030 when all baby boomers have reached or passed that age.
— The baby boom cohort ages the population between 2031 and 2050, with those 85 and older increasing from 896,600 last year to between 3.3. and 4.3 million by 2073.
— The average age for Canada's population would reach between 42.6 and 50.1 years by 2073.
