VICTORIA - The British Columbia NDP caucus says legislator Joan Phillip is dealing with an illness that requires additional testing.
New Democrat caucus chair Garry Begg said in a news release on Wednesday that Phillip is "experiencing some health issues" and more tests are underway.
No additional details on Phillip's condition have been announced.
"The BC NDP Caucus fully supports her and we are sending our love and strength to Joan," Begg said in the statement. "We ask that the public do the same while respecting her privacy."Â
Begg's statement also said Phillip will continue to represent her riding of Vancouver-Strathcona while dealing with the health challenge.Â
The BC Green caucus said in a statement that its members are sending "strength and support" to Phillip while she addresses the health issues.
“Joan’s presence in the Legislature has always been grounded in humility, warmth, and integrity," said West Vancouver—Sea to Sky MLA Jeremy Valeriote. "She brings so much to this house."
Phillip is the wife of Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs president Stewart Phillip, who has been serving in that post since 1998.
She voted on legislation this week as the B.C. legislature wrapped up its fall sitting.
The NDP holds a one-seat majority, with 47 seats in the 93-seat legislature
