Some videos and images on social media claiming to show Trudeau or the ºÃÉ«tv public's reaction to the announcement are either fake or misleading. Here's a look at some of them.
Video of crowd in bar cheering Trudeau's resignation is edited
A video , formerly Twitter, appears to show a "live reaction" to Trudeau's resignation.
It depicts a crowd of people in a bar who erupt into cheers as Trudeau's resignation speech plays on a screen.
The video received more than 100,000 likes and three million views.
A posted to X on Jan. 6 contains the same crowd reaction from the bar, but the video playing on the screen is from a Fox News broadcast of Trudeau's resignation.
Rating: Manipulated video
In the video, there are English flags placed on the bar. A keyword search of "bar," "celebration" and "England" shows the is from June 16, 2016 and depicts fans in Bristol reacting to the English soccer team's win during a game at the European Championship.
The video has since become a where users replace the original soccer video with different clips, giving the appearance of the crowd celebrating everything from to a .
While , it has been edited to appear as if it was playing on the screen at the bar.
Winnipeg Jets fan chant not in response to Trudeau resignation
A on Jan. 7 shared a video it claimed showed the "ºÃÉ«tv reaction" to Trudeau's resignation at a hockey game.
"ºÃÉ«tvs chant 'hey hey hey, goodbye' to Justin Trudeau during a hockey game," a caption overlaid on the video reads.
Rating: Misleading
The video doesn't mention where the chant supposedly took place, but the centre ice logo appears to belong to the Winnipeg Jets.
The Jets' shows they did not play a game on the day of Trudeau's resignation, and their game against the Nashville Predators on Dec. 7 took place in Winnipeg hours after the video was posted to TikTok.
A keyword search of "hey hey hey goodbye" and "Winnipeg Jets" leads to a version of the video on June 9, 2012.
The YouTube video's description says it was recorded at the Winnipeg Jets versus Dallas Stars game on March 14, 2012, making it clear the chant being a reaction to Trudeau's resignation is false.
Post claiming video shows ºÃÉ«tv reaction to resignation is from 2022 'Freedom Convoy' protest
A video that received more than 62,000 likes shows a crowd standing in front of a truck that bears Justin Trudeau's last name along with an expletive.
Some members of the crowd hold ºÃÉ«tv flags or dance while music plays in the background.
"ºÃÉ«tvs after being liberated from Justin Trudeau," the X post reads.
The video was by at least one account claiming the video shows "happy ºÃÉ«tvs" reacting to Trudeau's resignation, receiving more than a thousand likes.
Rating: Misleading
A reverse image search of a still from the video shows it was likely filmed during the 2022 "Freedom Convoy" protests in Ottawa, as shows the truck parked in the same location on Feb. 5, 2022 during the protest.
Geolocation using the Canada and RBC logos from a building in the background of both the video and photo confirm a location match near in Ottawa.
A reverse image search shows a version of the video without music was Jan. 30, 2022 on YouTube.
That video's description, machine translated from Russian, suggests it took place during the Freedom Convoy protest.
AI video of Trudeau resignation spreads online
A Dec. 20 showing what appears to be Trudeau announcing his resignation received more than a million plays.
Rating: AI-generated
However, both clicking through to the original audio and a Google search of a line from the video shows it originated from Instagram user @heysirio, who it to the platform on Dec. 17.
"This content is AI generated and is meant to be a parody," the user, under the handle , wrote in the comments of the video.
A reverse image search of a screenshot from the video leads to the posted by the prime minister to YouTube on Aug. 1, 2024.
In the YouTube video, Trudeau talks about Emancipation Day and not his resignation.
