HOUSTON (AP) 鈥 Grammy-nominated singer Eric Burton lost track of the lyrics during "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Friday night's World Series opener between Houston and Philadelphia.
With players and staff lined up on the field for the traditional pre-game ceremony, and a giant American flag unfurled across the outfield, the Black Pumas band leader went off track on the second line. He sang: 鈥淲hat so proudly we hail鈥檇 at the twilight鈥檚 last streaming鈥 instead of 鈥済leaming.鈥
He continued correctly with: 鈥淲hose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight." But then, instead of 鈥淥鈥檈r the ramparts we watch鈥檇 were so gallantly streaming?鈥 he backtracked to 鈥淲hat so proudly we hail鈥檇 at the twilight鈥檚 last鈥 before again singing 鈥渟treaming鈥 instead of 鈥済leaming."
Burton then picked up correctly with 鈥淎nd the rocket鈥檚 red glare, the bomb bursting in air鈥 and finished uneventfully.
Burton performed at last year's televised concert for President Joe Biden's inauguration.
