The provincial government says the Order of Nova Scotia is considered the highest honour in the province, recognizing people who have made lasting contributions in a number of areas. 

Also recognized this year is former premier Darrell Dexter and East Preston human rights advocate Carolyn G. Thomas.

Entrepreneur and philanthropist John George (Jack) Flemming and community leader Rankin MacSween have also been appointed.

Appointments are made by the lieutenant-governor on the recommendation of an independent advisory council, with 132 members named to the order since it was established in June 2001.
