HALIFAX - Mike Smith, an actor, writer and producer of the long-running comedy Trailer Park Boys, was arraigned in Nova Scotia provincial court Monday on a sexual assault charge.
The allegations against Smith have not been tested in court.

WHO IS MIKE SMITH – Smith, 53, is best known for playing Bubbles on the television show “Trailer Park Boys.†Born near New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, he has won a ºÃÉ«tv Comedy Award and two Gemini Awards for his work on the show.
He was also the guitarist for rock band Sandbox in the mid-1990s. They were nominated for Best New Group at the Juno Awards in 1996, but lost to The Philosopher Kings.Â
WHAT CHARGE DOES HE FACE – Smith was charged with sexual assault on Oct. 2 in relation to an incident that allegedly occurred in December 2017.Â
The court ordered a publication ban on anything that would identify the female complainant. Court documents do not include details of the alleged assault, but show that Smith has been ordered not to communicate with or visit the home, work, or school of the complainant.
In April 2016, Smith faced a misdemeanour domestic battery charge in Los Angeles following a separate incident at a Hollywood hotel involving a woman. That charge was dropped a month later.
Smith denied any wrongdoing in a written statement issued shortly after his April 1, 2016, arrest, saying the woman involved in the Hollywood incident was a friend of his with whom he had a “loud and heated dispute.â€
WHAT IS THE RESPONSE - Trailer Park Boys Incorporated, a Nova Scotia-based company with Smith registered as one of three directors, posted a statement on social media saying the company is aware of the allegations and takes them seriously.
“We recognize how difficult an allegation of this nature is for all involved,†the statement reads. “At this time, Mike has stepped away from his role at Trailer Park Boys Incorporated.†The other two registered directors of the company are JP Tremblay and Robb Wells, who also star in the show.
The statement says the company remains “focused on delivering the long-awaited 13th season for our fans.†The Trailer Park Boys announced in August that they had completed filming for the 10-episode season, which will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the series next year.
WHAT IS TRAILER PARK BOYS – “Trailer Park Boys†is a mockumentary set in the fictional Sunnyvale Trailer Park. The show follows Smith’s character Bubbles, Julian, played by Tremblay, and Ricky, played by Wells. The trio try several get-rich-quick schemes, while attempting to avoid the former trailer park supervisor and his assistant.Â
The show was created by Mike Clattenburg as a continuation of a 1995 short film “The Cart Boys.†It originally ran for seven seasons, before spawning four feature-length films, two spinoff series, and a Christmas special.
Trailer Park Boys announced in July that it was launching its own streaming service to host its content.
The show has also aired in multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.
WHO ELSE WAS ON THE SHOW – In addition to the three leads, several recognizable ºÃÉ«tv actors and directors have had stints on the show. John Dunsworth and Patrick Roach were part of the main cast, playing the trailer park supervisor Jim Lahey and assistant Randy. Lucy Decoutere appeared in 80 episodes as Lucy, and Jonathan Torrens has appeared throughout the show’s run as fan-favourite J-Roc. Torrens also wrote and directed several episodes.Â
Well-known actors who have appeared in episodes on the show’s multi-year run include Elliot Page, who played Treena Lahey in the early seasons. Tom Arnold and Brian Austin Green each appeared, while Jay Baruchel has directed an episode. Snoop Dogg even guest-starred in a short run of five episodes.Â
