Usher accepted the lifetime achievement award at the 2024 BET Awards 鈥 even if the superstar mused it might be a bit early.

The Grammy winner stayed on his feet as a parade of artists performed his hits 鈥 Childish Gambino kicked it off with 鈥淯 Don鈥檛 Have to Call,鈥 joined by Keke Palmer, who took the lead on 鈥淵ou Make Me Wanna...鈥 Coco Jones appeared in the audience for a sultry rendition of 鈥淭here Goes My Baby,鈥 serenading Usher and his wife Jenn Goicoechea.

Summer Walker hit the stage for 鈥淕ood Good,鈥 did 鈥淣ice & Slow,鈥 Marsha Ambrosius tackled 鈥淪uperstar鈥 and Chl枚e performed 鈥淕ood Kisser.鈥 Teyana Taylor and Victoria Mon茅t teamed up for 鈥淏ad Girl,鈥 mirroring Usher and Beyonc茅鈥檚 choreography from their performance of the song. Latto brought the energy for 鈥淵eah!鈥 In some ways, the homage underscored the women that carried much of the night 鈥 dominating the performances.

After introductions by Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam, Usher accepted the award from music executive L.A. Reid.

鈥淕etting here has definitely not been easy, but it has been worth it,鈥 Usher began his lengthy speech, reflecting on his career, which has spanned over three decades. He questioned the timing, saying, "I鈥檓 still running and gunning and I still love this (expletive) like I did when I was 8 years old,鈥 he said.

Much of his speech couldn't be heard to audiences at home because it was censored.

鈥淚 forgive each and every person who had anything to say negative about me because it only motivated me to be who I am," he said at one point.

Earlier in the night, stood in a circle of fire 鈥 joined by Fridayy and the gospel choir Sunday Service 鈥 to make the live debut of his latest single, 鈥淵ou Can Make It.鈥

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know who needs this right now,鈥 Smith opened his set. 鈥淏ut I am here to tell you, you can make it.鈥

Mid-way through, Kirk Franklin joined, and then two rapped together. 鈥淣obody gets an easy ride,鈥 Smith, who is in the midst of his comeback from two years ago, told the room. 鈥淭here is wisdom in that fire. Dance in your darkest moments.鈥

The election is top of mind

The forthcoming U.S. presidential election was a huge topic of conversation throughout the show. After Childish Gambino presented Killer Mike with the album of the year award for the rapper used his acceptance speech to address his and voting.

鈥淭echnically, I was not supposed to be here. I was put in handcuffs, and I was marched out of this building. But I want to tell you, look at God. 鈥機ause I鈥檓 back, baby. I鈥檓 back and I鈥檓 winning,鈥 he said in his speech. Killer Mike was arrested at the Grammys earlier this year over a physical altercation he said was caused by an 鈥渙ver-zealous鈥 security guard; he was not .

鈥淭hey going to tell you who we vote for is important,鈥 he continued his speech, 鈥淎nd it is who we vote for on the big stage. It鈥檚 important, but it鈥檚 more important you know who your city council person is, who your prosecutor is.鈥

Women dominate on stage and across genre

Megan Thee Stallion opened the show by emerging from an egg 鈥 a metaphor for her a new musical rebirth 鈥 before diving into with an energetic medley of her new singles 鈥淗iss" and 鈥淏oa.鈥

鈥淏ET, Where my girls at?" she said, shouting out Mon茅t and Jones in the crowd before launching into 鈥淲here Them Girls At鈥 鈥 a track that's been an immediate fan favorite since Friday's release of her

hosted the show at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Her opening monologue was a performance, Henson rapping 鈥淚t's about us,鈥 in a loose parody of Kendrick Lamar's 鈥淣ot Like Us,鈥 which he released in the midst of his reignited with Drake.

鈥淣o beef in here tonight,鈥 she joked, 鈥淐an we say plant-based?鈥

Tyla, the Johannesburg , won two honors on the show, starting with best international act.

Later in the night, she'd take home the award for best new artist. 鈥淭his is crazy,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 just want to dedicate this one to Africa.鈥

Mon茅t, who earlier this year won the , made her BET debut and set a high bar for performances, condensing a full set into a few mins with three costume changes and a pair of songs, 鈥淥n My Mama鈥 and 鈥淎lright.鈥

Then Sexyy Red took the stage, performing her smooth bedroom ballad 鈥淯 My Everything鈥 before moving to another stage and a costume change 鈥 tackling 鈥淕et It Sexyy鈥 in front of an LED screen depicting the White House and dancers dressed like the Secret Service.

The show took a tonal shift when VanVan and Heiress Harris, two child rappers, their empowerment anthem 鈥淏e You鈥 in a school room set. Harris is the daughter of rapper T.I. and singer Tiny Harris.

Lauren Hill and son YG Marley help close the show

Best female R&B/pop artist went to SZA and best actress to Regina King, both of whom were not in attendance; the BET HER award went to Mon茅t for 鈥淥n My Mama.鈥 She brought her mother up to accept it.

Country musician Tanner Adell brought her 鈥淏uckle Bunny鈥 and her new song, 鈥淐owboy Break My Heart.鈥 GloRilla emerged from above, descending to join her dancers for 鈥淵eah Glo!鈥 and 鈥淲anna Be鈥 鈥 the latter of which saw a surprise appearance from Megan Thee Stallion. Shaboozey kept the country coming with and was joined by rapper J-Kwon, who appears on the track, creating an unexpected and rewarding collaboration across genres.

Lauryn Hill closed the night, beginning with 鈥淭he Miseducation of Lauryn Hill鈥 going into 鈥淟ost Ones,鈥 before introducing her son YG Marley for his reggae tracks 鈥淪urvival鈥 and 鈥淧raise Jah In The Moonlight.鈥 Best of all: Wyclef Jean appeared, and the trio 鈥 in front of a full-band 鈥 performed Fugees鈥 鈥淔u-Gee-La.鈥 Pras, , was not present. The rapper, who was accused in multimillion-dollar political conspiracies spanning two presidencies, in April.
