PARIS (AP) 鈥 Anouk Aim茅e, the radiant French star and dark-eyed beauty of classic films including Federico Fellini's 鈥淟a Dolce Vita" and Claude Lelouch's 鈥淎 Man and a Woman,鈥 has died. She was 92.

Aim茅e's agent, S茅bastien Perrolat said in an text message to The Associated Press that Aim茅e died Tuesday morning 鈥渟urrounded by her loved ones.鈥 He did not give a cause of death.

鈥淚 was beside her when she died this morning, at her home in Paris,鈥 Aim茅e鈥檚 daughter Manuela Papatakis wrote on Instagram.

Aim茅e worked with an array of acclaimed directors, including Jacques Demy, Bernardo Bertolucci, Jacques Becker, Robert Altman and Sidney Lumet. She was perhaps best known for 1966's 鈥淎 Man and a Woman,鈥 in which she starred opposite Jean-Louis Trintignant as a widow who meets a widower race-car driver (Trintignant) at the boarding school where each has a child attending.

The film was an enormous success, winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Aim茅e for her performance and was nominated for an Oscar. The film won Academy Awards for Lelouch's screenplay and for best foreign language film.

But Aim茅e's career spanned seven decades 鈥 she reunited with Lelouch and Trintignant for 2019's 鈥淭he Best Years of a Life鈥 鈥 and across that time remained a uniquely elegant and enigmatic presence. She stared in Fellini's 鈥淟a Dolce Vita鈥 (1960) as the seductive socialite Maddalena and again in the director's 鈥8 1/2鈥 (1963) as the estranged wife of Marcello Mastroianni's filmmaker.

Fellini once said Aim茅e 鈥渞epresents the type of woman who leaves you flustered and confused 鈥 to death." He said she belonged among the pantheon of cinema's 鈥済reat, mysterious queens," comparing her to Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Joan Crawford.

鈥淎 film is always much richer when actors have the confidence not to explain, but just to do; when they feel secure enough to leave things open,鈥 Aim茅e told The Guardian in 2007.

Aim茅e was born Nicole Fran莽oise Florence Dreyfus on April 27, 1932, to actor parents Henri Dreyfus (who acted under the name Henry Murray) and Genevieve Sorya. At the age of 13, Aim茅e was walking down a Paris street when the director Henri Calef stopped her and asked if she would like to be a movie. Aim茅e later said she was on the way to see 鈥淒ouble Indemnity鈥 with her mother.

Aim茅e took her character鈥檚 name, Anouk, from her first film: 鈥淭he House Under the Sea.鈥 鈥淎im茅e鈥 鈥 the French word meaning 鈥渓oved鈥 鈥 came from the poet Jacques Pr茅vert who co-wrote her first lead role in 1951's 鈥淭he Lovers of Verona,鈥 a modern-day 鈥淩omeo and Juliet.鈥

Following 鈥淟a Dolce Vita,鈥 Aim茅e starred in Jacques Demy鈥檚 鈥淟ola鈥 (1961) a New Wave soap opera about a cabaret entertainer with a string of lovers. 鈥淟ola,鈥 Demy's first film, was less appreciated at the time but is now considered a standout of French New Wave cinema. Eight years later, Aim茅e reprised the role in the Los Angeles-set 鈥淢odel Shop,鈥 playing a woman working in a photo studio.

Aim茅e married and divorced four times. The first three marriages 鈥 to Edouad Zimmermann, the filmmaker Nikos Papatakis, the actor and composer Pierre Barouh 鈥 didn't last four years. Her longest was to the British actor Albert Finney, whom she was married to from 1970 to 1978.

Though Aim茅e had brushes with Hollywood, including Lumet's 鈥淭he Appointment鈥 and Altman's 鈥淧r锚t-脿-Porter,鈥 she remained largely a European film actor. Among the roles she turned down was Vicki Anderson in 鈥淭he Thomas Crown Affair,鈥 the role that eventually went to Faye Dunaway who starred opposite Steve McQueen.

But Aim茅e remained a legend in France. She won best actress in Cannes for the 1980 dark comedy 鈥淎 Leap in the Dark." In 2002, she was given a lifetime achievement award at the C茅sars, France's equivalent to the Oscars. On Tuesday, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, in a statement, called her 鈥渢he symbol of elegance, talent, commitment.鈥

鈥淭he secret 鈥 it was Fellini who taught me this 鈥 is that the most important thing of all is to listen,鈥 Aim茅e told The Guardian of acting. 鈥淛ust listen, to what the other characters say. And don鈥檛 take it too seriously. So, no regrets.鈥
