S&P/TSX composite up nearly 80 points, while U.S. stock markets were mixed

TORONTO - Canada's main stock index was higher in late-morning trading Tuesday on gains in the basic materials sector, while U.S. markets were mixed. 

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 78.12 points at 31,972.32.
