OTTAWA - First Nations are stuck in a "spiralling cycle" during wildfire seasons due to a lack of co-ordinated emergency management supports and a severe housing gap, the federal housing advocate is warning in a report on the 2025 wildfire season.

Last year saw the second-worst wildfire season on record, with 165 emergency events impacting 134 First Nations. More than 40,000 people were evacuated by mid-August from at least 83 communities.
