OTTAWA - NDP parliamentary leader Don Davies says Prime Minister Mark Carney's own words suggest government advertising about building clean energy projects violates Canada's law against greenwashing.Â
The Competition Bureau defines greenwashing as false, misleading or unsubstantiated environmental claims about a product, service or practice.
Davies is asking the Competition Bureau to investigate whether government advertising which says Canada is building a "cleaner future" violates the legislation which outlaws greenwashing.
Davies argues Carney himself has acknowledged Canada's emissions are going to be higher after policy changes to roll back some Trudeau-era climate policies.
The greenwashing law was first passed under former prime minister Justin Trudeau but was amended by Carney's government to lighten the burden of proof to substantiate environmental claims and preventing third parties, such as environment groups, from requesting greenwashing investigations.
The statements at the centre of the NDP complaint were made by Carney in June when he said Canada's old climate plan was too expensive and divisive, while the new one boasts significant investment in renewables and will lower emissions in the long term.
